Patent Application for New Biomarkers for Breast Cancer Filed by Power3 Medical

HOUSTON, February 23, 2007 - Power3 Medical Products, Inc. (OTCBB: PWRM), said today that it has filed an application with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for 10 new biomarkers it has discovered for use in the early diagnosis and detection of breast cancer.

The 10 new biomarkers are in addition to the 12 protein biomarkers in human blood covered in a utility patent application filed in December 2006 by Power3, and provide the potential basis for a second breast cancer early detection blood test for the company. The patent application was Power3’s seventh in the last 10 months and its 14th overall.

The inventors listed on the application are Ira L. Goldknopf, Ph.D., Essam A. Sheta, Ph.D. and Jennifer K. Bryson of Power3, and Dr. Alan Hollingsworth, a nationally-known breast cancer surgical oncologist at Mercy Woman’s Center in Oklahoma City and a member of Power3's Scientific Advisory Board.

90 Sensitivity, 95% Specificity in Early Tests

The invention/patent application relates to 10 protein biomarkers in blood serum that undergo pronounced changes in blood serum concentration with meaningful indications of early detection of breast cancer. When used in combination, this new group of biomarkers has distinguished 75 breast cancer patients from110 normal control individuals with greater than 90% sensitivity and greater than 95% specificity.

Steven B. Rash, chairman and CEO of Power 3, said that his company, which is engaged in the discovery and commercialization of protein biomarkers for early detection, identification of disease mechanism and pathways, plans to augment its original 12 breast cancer biomarkers with findings covered in this patent application.

“By the time a patient is diagnosed with breast cancer by mammography and subsequent biopsy, the patient has often had the disease for an average 6-10 years,” Mr. Rash said, noting that the more-sensitive MRI can detect more than twice as many breast cancers as mammography, but is frequently cost-prohibitive.

“Today, genetic mutational tests (BRCA 1 and 2 genes) can detect genetic disposition of breast cancer risk, but aggressive screening, usually with breast MRI, is chosen more often than preventive mastectomy by patients who test BRCA-positive,” he said.

“The testing of genetic activity in tumor tissue, such as the MammaPrint test recently approved by the FDA, is useful only after a tumor has been removed,” he said. “Power3 believes that a blood test is more useful in the early detection of breast cancer.

“While imaging of breast tumors is key to localization and treatment, a sensitive early detection screening test with cost comparable to mammograms is needed to justify the high cost and insurance reimbursement for auxiliary imaging with ultrasound and/or MRI,” Mr. Rash said. “Patients who are positive with a sensitive early detection blood test can be routed to ultrasound and/or MRI screening, bridging the gap between MRI and Mammography alone.”

Mr. Rash said that “with 18 patent applications now filed, Power3 is gaining in reputation and position worldwide as a leader in the use of proteomics to discover biomarkers for early detection of breast cancer Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Lou Gehrig’s and neurodegenerative diseases. Power3,” he said, “is moving forward to license proprietary technologies to pharmaceutical companies and diagnostic test manufacturers for the development of commercial applications, and we continue to work with strategic partners in the diagnostic and pharmaceutical arenas in order to facilitate the accelerated introduction of Power3’s technology into the marketplace.”
