Lone Star Symphonic Band Travels Around the World in Spring Concert
HOUSTON, February 27, 2007 - The Lone Star Symphonic Band This spring the Lone Star Symphonic Band will be traveling great distances. For the Band’s annual spring concert, to be held on Sunday, April 1st, 2007, music from across the globe will be performed. The Concert, titled, “The International Language of Music,” will begin at 7:00 pm in the Performing Arts Center of Houston Community College – Town and Country Campus, located at 1060 West Sam Houston Parkway North, at I-10 West. Selections of music slated to be performed during the concert include "Armenian Dances" by Alfred Reed, "English Dances" by Malcolm Arnold, "The Engulfed Cathedral" by Claude Debussy, "Espana Cani" by Pascual Marquina, "Slavonic Dances" by Anton Dvorak, and "Tulsa: A Symphonic Portrait in Oil" by Don Gillis. The concert will be emceed by Mr. Robert Grundy, Reference Librarian at Prairie View A & M University.
The Lone Star Symphonic Band is an adult semi-professional wind ensemble dedicated to bringing performances of artistic merit to the Houston area community. Founded in 1993 as the West Houston Concert Band, the band is comprised of musicians from all walks of life and instills the value that music is a life-long event, continuing well beyond high school and college, and awards the Jon K. Fisher Memorial Scholarship to students majoring in Music. In the summer of 2005, the Band entered into a joint venture with Houston Community College – Town and Country Campus, offering the band as a course for credit to HCC students interested in performing with an ensemble. The Band is under the direction of Dr. Clancy Weeks.
