About the Sakowitz Building
Prolific Texas architect Alfred C. Finn designed The Sakowitz Bros. Department Store at 1111 Main Street in downtown Houston. Construction finished in 1951. The influence of Art Deco and Art Moderne styling was particularly evident in the Sakowitz sales departments. The building served as Sakowitz Bros. Department Store until the store closing in 1985. Spire Realty purchased the building in 1998 and renovated the interior as a parking garage, while maintaining the historic facade. Younan Properties recently purchased the significant Houston landmark, which is attached to the 1010 Lamar office building, and has donated use of the facility for the gala event. The original exterior remains intact, though very little survives of Finn’s original interiors, with the exception of patches of terrazzo flooring.
