Regular readers of the eDoc "Health Tips" may remember a previously
published article on Methicillin Resistance Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA)
entitled "Revenge of the Microbes". With the recent media blitz
concerning MRSA and the infections that it can cause, I thought it was
time to revisit this subject.
MRSA emerged many years ago in hospitals where a strain of Staph
underwent a genetic mutation that allowed it to fend off the effects of
many antibiotics. MRSA flourished in hospitals and health care
facilities where it caused serious infections in bones, joints, the
bloodstream and surgical wounds. Up until recently, MRSA primarily
affected those who were seriously illin a hospital or had diseases that
weakened their immune systems. Over the past several years, however,
MRSA infections in people not considered high-risk have increased.
