Finding It Hard To Land The Perfect Job?
An HBR Special
Finding a new job is hard work at the best of times, but actually getting your ideal job can be much more difficult. If you have been applying for months and have not been able to get the job you want, you need to re-examine your job search strategy, find out what you are doing wrong and fix it.
The first question to ask yourself is: Am I are getting interviews and are they the ones I want? If the answer to either of these questions is no, you need to discover why. To start with , ask yourself if you are aiming at the right level?
Your perfect job may be slightly beyond your current level of experience and skills and that means you need to aim a little lower. But don't be disheartened by this - just find jobs which give you the opportunity to move up the ladder towards your goal.
You can do this by looking at the job descriptions for your perfect job, that is information for jobs you've applied for but didn't get. Or you can get hold of new job descriptions for jobs which match your goals. Just don't apply for them. Instead, read the information carefully and work out exactly what new experience and skills you need.
Now you need to find a job that will give you those skills. It could be at the same company, if they are hiring at a more junior level or it could be elsewhere.
Next you need to look at your resume or CV and make sure it is properly targeted , which means it provides the exact information each employer is looking for. You must read the job description carefully and then adjust your resume to fit.
If you are getting plenty of interviews, but no-one is prepared to hire you, you need to figure out exactly what the problem is. Try getting feedback from the interviewers as this could show up something you aren't aware of.
Are you preparing your answers in advance, researching the company and the industry before your interview?
Are you using the right body language and not talking too much or too little? Everyone is nervous at an interview and sometimes this can make you babble on or it can have the opposite effect, making you clam up. Either way, this won't get you the job.
Your answers need to be concise, to the point and to tell the interviewer what he wants to know and nothing else. If he wants more details, he'll ask a follow-up questions.
It's also important to dress correctly, hold yourself positively and respond to the body language of the interviewers.
To become successful at interview technique, spend some time analysing your previous interviews and prepare properly for the next one.
