Franchising is a great choice, but it is only one option for getting into business. It is always good to understand your options and determine what is best for you. Every choice has its advantages and disadvantages.
The three basic options are:
- Start a business from scratch
- Buy an existing business
- Purchase a franchise
If you start your business from scratch, you are limited only by your imagination, but there is no proven system, no correlation between investment and profit potential and no support after purchase. The business has unknown risk factors, is not attractive to lenders, results can be difficult to predict and any necessary changes are up to the owner to implement.
If you buy an existing business, availability is limited, but there is a proven system, the correlation between investment and profit potential are high, there is some limited support after purchase and potential lenders may be more interested. However, the seller could have hidden motives, results are based on historical data and any changes to the business are still up to the owner to implement.
If you purchase a franchise, there are many available markets with a proven system in place. There is no correlation between investment and profit potential yet the support after purchase from the franchisor is high. There may or may not be high risk factors in individual franchise systems, and any needed changes may be limited by a franchise agreement. Still, lenders find franchises very desirable investments and results projections are based on current data from other owners in the system
